Dartford gets written off as a place you pass through on the way to the crossing, which is unfair, because within the borough you can spend a free day in one of Kent’s best town parks, walk a rare lowland heath, ride what its operator calls England’s longest zipline, and stand where Mick Jagger met Keith Richards. This guide covers what is genuinely worth your time in 2026, with opening times and prices checked against each venue’s own website this August, and a clear note on the one big caveat this year: the Orchard Theatre is still weeks from reopening.

Central Park and Buccaneer Bay

Central Park is the heart of it: riverside lawns along the Darent, a wildflower meadow, a community orchard where the fruit is free to pick in late summer, picnic benches and a café serving everything from breakfast to main meals. The star for families is Buccaneer Bay, the pirate-themed play park with separate zones for under-5s and over-5s and a free water play park that runs through the summer months, no booking needed (Dartford Borough Council).

Gates open at 6am year round, with closing varying by season, as late as around 10pm in high summer. Through August the park is also the venue for the council’s free-and-cheap events season: Cinema in the Park runs 12 to 27 August, an outdoor Much Ado About Nothing plays 18 August, and Sunday bandstand concerts continue to 30 August (council events). The big one, the free Big Day Out festival weekend with live music, a steam rally and fairground, returned on 11 and 12 July this year, so pencil in mid-July 2027.

What it means for you: the best free family day in the borough is this park in summer. Arrive with a picnic, let the splash park do the work, pay nothing.

The Orchard Theatre: back on 12 December

Get this right before booking a show. The main Orchard Theatre has been closed since 2023 after dangerous RAAC concrete was found in its roof. The concrete has now been removed and the theatre reopens on Saturday 12 December 2026 with the Cinderella pantomime, with main-house shows on sale into 2027 (Dartford Borough Council, Orchard Theatre).

Until September 2026, shows run at Orchard West, the temporary 1,000-seat venue a short walk away: this month alone brings Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em (7 to 8 August), the youth production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (21 to 23 August), Elvis and Bee Gees tribute nights (26 and 27 August) and Peppa Pig’s Big Family Show (29 to 30 August) (Orchard Theatre). Dartford Museum: free, but check the hours

The borough museum on Market Street is free, with around 20,000 items telling the area’s story from the internationally important Swanscombe skull finds onward. Its published hours changed in April 2026 to 1pm to 4.45pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 1pm to 4pm Saturday, closed Sunday, with Wednesday not listed, so it is worth a call (01322 224739 via the council) before a special trip (Dartford Borough Council).

Walks: Dartford Heath, Darenth Country Park and the Darent Valley Path

  • Dartford Heath is 314 acres of one of the south east’s few surviving lowland heaths: heather, dwarf gorse, seasonal ponds, and birds from linnets to red kites. Car parks are unlocked 7am to 6.30pm (Dartford Borough Council).
  • Darenth Country Park, on the chalk edge of the North Downs, has SSSI grassland, a traditional orchard with over 150 fruit and nut varieties and a Saxon burial mound, with paved and unpaved paths and the Fastrack B bus stopping nearby (Dartford Borough Council). The council runs guided bat walks here on 14 August and at Brooklands on 5 September (council events).
  • The Darent Valley Path starts at the Thames in Dartford and runs 19 miles up the valley through the Kent Downs to beyond Sevenoaks, waymarked and dog-friendly the whole way (Explore Kent). Walk a stretch and get the train back.

Bluewater and Hangloose: the big spend day

Bluewater at Greenhithe is in the borough, ten minutes from the town centre on the Fastrack A bus, and it is more than shops: alongside the Showcase Cinema De Lux and the dinosaur-themed Dinotropolis soft play sits Hangloose Adventure, whose Skywire is billed as England’s longest zipline, with a giant swing, high ropes, indoor skydiving and an Aqua Park from about £22.50 a person, open year round (Bluewater, Hangloose Adventure). Centre hours are 10am to 9pm weekdays, 9am to 9pm Saturday and 11am to 5pm Sunday (Bluewater).

Music town: the Mick Jagger Centre and the Glimmer Twins

Dartford’s rock heritage is real: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards both grew up here and famously met on platform 2 of Dartford station in 1961. The Glimmer Twins bronze statues by sculptor Amy Goodman have stood at One Bell Corner on the High Street since 2023, and there is a Jagger portrait bench in Central Park (KentOnline).

The living end of that heritage is the Mick Jagger Centre at Dartford Grammar School, an active venue whose autumn 2026 bill runs from comedy nights (4 September) and the Dartford Symphony Orchestra (17 October) to Christmas concerts in December (The Mick Jagger Centre).

Swimming, football and a rainy day

  • Fairfield Leisure Centre on Lowfield Street is the town’s pool, run by Places Leisure with the council: pools, gym and studios, open from 6am weekdays, with swim-inclusive memberships from about £26 a month (Places Leisure).
  • Dartford FC play in the Isthmian League Premier Division at Princes Park, one of the country’s greenest-built stadiums, with family-friendly matchday tickets (Dartford FC), and Ebbsfleet United play National League South football at the Morrow Stadium by Ebbsfleet International (Ebbsfleet United).
  • Raining? The museum is free, the Showcase at Bluewater runs all day, and from 12 December the Orchard’s panto is the obvious answer.

Getting there and parking
